hash vs weed

September 14, 2026 8 Min Read

Every article you will find on this question opens the same way: hash is two to three times stronger than weed. It is the one fact everybody agrees on, and for a Canadian buyer in 2026 it is close to useless.

Here is the number that should have been in those articles. When researchers ran lab analysis on seized Lebanese hash, it averaged 2.38% THC. Not 23%. Not 40%. Two point three eight. Moroccan samples came in at 9.21%, Indian at 6.35%. Meanwhile the dried flower on a Canadian legal shelf is labelled somewhere between 23% and 29%.

Read that again, because it reverses the entire premise. Traditional imported hash was not a stronger version of weed. For most of the time people have been smoking it, it was the weaker product.

Hash is a method, not a potency class

This is the part that clears everything up, and almost nobody says it plainly.

Hash is trichome resin that has been separated from the plant and pressed together. Sieving, beating, hand rubbing, ice water. That is all it is. It is a process, and a process does not have a THC percentage. The material you put into it does.

Run that sieve over a traditional Moroccan landrace testing 3% and you get hash around 8%. Run the exact same sieve over a modern hybrid testing 25% and you get hash north of 50%. Same technique, wildly different result, because the plant changed.

So when a blog tells you “hash is 20 to 60% THC,” it has mistaken a method for a product. The honest answer to “is hash stronger than weed” is that it depends entirely on what the hash was made from, and for imported traditional hash the answer has often been no.

The numbers nobody quotes

Source Herbal cannabis Hash / resin
EU-wide dataset (EMCDDA) 7.7% THC 8.2% THC
UK government lab, 2003 7.0% THC 5.1% THC
US federal seizures, 1993 to 2008 14.1% average, SD 15.7
Seized Lebanese samples 2.38% THC
Ontario legal market, 2024 23.1% (low label) 44% average, 23 to 68% range

Look at the US federal line for a second. A mean of 14.1% with a standard deviation of 15.7. The spread is bigger than the average. That is a statistician’s way of saying the phrase “hash is X percent THC” does not describe anything real.

And look at the Ontario line, because that one is about the product you can actually buy. Legal Canadian hash averages 44%, which is genuinely stronger than flower. But the bottom of its range is 23%, and 23% is roughly what average legal flower tests at. The weakest legal hash is no stronger than ordinary bud.

The gap is real in Europe, where the comparison is resin at 23% against street herb at 11%. That is where the “two to three times stronger” line comes from. It gets repeated in Canada without anyone noticing that Canadian legal flower is not 11% European street weed, it is labelled 23% and up. Apply a European statistic to a Canadian shelf and you get the wrong answer.

What actually changed was the CBD

This is the most useful thing in this article and you will not find it on the pages currently ranking for this question.

Those seized Lebanese samples at 2.38% THC also carried 8.98% CBD. Close to four parts CBD to one part THC. Traditional Moroccan sat at 3.72% CBD. Modern hybrid resin and today’s solventless hash run near zero CBD.

If you have ever heard an older smoker say the hash they had in the eighties felt heavy and mellow and sat you in a chair, while today’s hash feels sharp and closer to a dab, that is the explanation. It was never only about THC climbing. It is about the CBD disappearing from the plant that the hash gets made from.

CBD blunts the edge of THC. Take it out and you have not just made the product stronger, you have changed its character. Two different experiences, sold under one word.

Why the plants changed

There is a specific, documented reason, and it is recent.

Moroccan growers historically used a landrace called kif, or beldia. Low THC, high CBD, and it produced the classic soft brown hash that French police testing put around 8%. Starting in the early 2000s, growers began replacing it with imported high-THC hybrids because the hybrids yield far more resin per plant. By 2012, Moroccan hash seized in France averaged 16%.

The trend line in seizure data tells the same story. Hash sampled in Rome sat at 13.7% in 2015 and reached 27.1% by 2022. Flat for decades, then a steep climb in under ten years.

The hash did not get better at concentrating. The fields got stronger.

So what does hash actually give you that flower does not

Since we sell hash and no flower at all, let us be straight about this: you are almost certainly not choosing between them. You already have weed. The real question is what hash adds.

Flower Hash
What you are smoking Whole dried bud, resin plus plant material Separated resin, most plant material removed
Burns on its own Yes Poorly. It melts rather than smoulders
Preparation Grind and roll Warm, crumble, or knife it
Smell while smoking Strong, lingers, unmistakable Softer and shorter, easier to be discreet with
Amount per session A third to half a gram is normal A tenth of a gram is a full session
Shelf life Degrades noticeably within months Holds up far longer when pressed and stored right

That “burns poorly on its own” row is the one that catches people out. Hash does not smoulder the way a joint does, which is why it usually goes into a bowl on top of flower, into a pipe, or gets crumbled through a joint rather than rolled solo. Our guide to seven ways to smoke hash covers the practical side, and how much hash per joint handles the ratio question directly.

The tolerance thing nobody warns you about

If you smoke flower daily, your first hash session may underwhelm you, and then the second one may take the roof off. Both are normal and both are about dose, not quality.

A tenth of a gram of 44% hash and half a gram of 24% flower are not the comparison most people think they are making. The hash is a much smaller amount of a much stronger material, and your judgement of “how much is a normal amount” was calibrated on bud.

Start with less than you think. A piece the size of a match head is a real dose. Our dosing guide has the full version if you want it.

On label percentages generally. Independent testing of retail flower in Colorado found an observed average of 14.98% THC against labels claiming 20.27% to 24.10%. Seventy-eight percent of samples came in below even the bottom of their printed range. Treat any THC number on any package, ours included, as a marketing figure rather than a measurement. Percentages are a rough sort order, not a promise.

The Canadian legal bit that catches people out

Under the Cannabis Act, hash is not its own category. It is a cannabis extract, the same class as shatter and rosin, because Health Canada groups sifting, beating and rubbing to separate resin alongside solvent extraction as processing activities.

That classification has a consequence most people miss. Schedule 3 of the Act sets an equivalency: 0.25 g of concentrate counts as 1 g of dried cannabis. The public possession limit is 30 g dried equivalent, which means:

  • Your public limit for hash is 7.5 grams, not 30.
  • One gram of hash counts as four grams of flower against that limit.
  • The 30 g cap applies in a public place. The federal Act sets no quantity limit inside your home.

Carrying a 14 g bar around in your jacket puts you over the public limit even though it would be well under it as flower. Worth knowing before you travel with it.

Which should you actually buy

Straight answers, given we have a stake in one side of this.

If you want Go with
The cheapest route to a given amount of THC Flower. Per milligram of THC, legal hash generally costs more
Something that burns on its own in a joint Flower. Hash needs a carrier or a pipe
Less smell and less smoke for the same effect Hash. Far less material burned per session
Something that keeps for a year in a drawer Hash. Pressed resin ages better than bud
A different character of high, not just more of it Hash, especially traditional imported styles
Maximum strength per gram Hash, but check the number rather than assuming

If you are coming from flower and want the gentlest entry point, the blonde Moroccan styles in our Moroccan hash selection are the closest thing to what bud already feels like. If you want the opposite, the full melt and fresh frozen material in exotic hash is well past anything flower does. The Lebanese and Afghan styles sit between the two and are where most people end up.

Questions people ask

Is hash stronger than weed?

Usually yes on the Canadian legal market, where hash averages 44% against flower around 23%. But not always, and historically often not at all. Traditional imported hash has tested weaker than herbal cannabis in multiple national datasets.

Does hash get you higher than weed?

Per gram, yes. Per session, that depends entirely on how much you use, and people use far less hash than flower. A percentage is not a dose.

Why does old hash feel different from new hash?

Mostly the CBD. Traditional hash carried several percent CBD alongside modest THC. Modern material has almost none, which removes the softening effect and sharpens the high.

Can I roll hash on its own in a joint?

Not really. It melts instead of smouldering and keeps going out. Crumble it through flower, put it in a bowl, or use a pipe.

How much hash equals a gram of weed?

Legally, one gram of hash counts as four grams of dried cannabis toward your public possession limit. By effect, treat a tenth of a gram of good hash as a full session.

Is hash legal in Canada?

Yes, as a cannabis extract under the Cannabis Act, subject to the 7.5 g public possession limit described above.

The short version

Hash is not a stronger kind of weed. It is resin separated from whatever plant it came from, and its strength is inherited from that plant rather than from the process. Traditional imported hash was frequently weaker than flower and much higher in CBD, which is why it felt the way it did. Modern hash is stronger because the fields changed, not because the sieve improved.

For a Canadian buyer, the practical differences that matter are smell, how much you burn, how it keeps, and how it needs to be prepared. Not the percentage on the label.

If you want to go deeper on grading before you spend anything, how to tell good hash from bad is the most useful next read, and storing it properly is what protects the money you just spent. The full range is in all hash.
