Moroccan hash is the stuff most people picture when they hear the word hash. Flat pressed slabs, tan to dark brown, sold by the gram and smoked in a pipe or crumbled into a joint. It is the most widely produced hash on earth and it is what built the reputation of imported hash in Canada long before any of it was legal.

What Moroccan hash is

Moroccan hash is dry sift. Harvested cannabis is dried, then beaten or shaken over a fine mesh screen so the resin glands fall through and the plant material stays behind. The powder that collects underneath is kief. Press that kief with heat and pressure and you get hash.

Almost all of it comes from the Rif mountains in northern Morocco, where the Ketama region has been farming cannabis for this purpose for centuries. The plants grown there are landrace varieties selected for resin yield rather than flower quality, which is why Moroccan hash tastes the way it does and nothing like a modern high-THC strain.

The screening step is what separates the grades. A single pass through a coarse screen picks up resin plus a lot of green plant matter, and you get dark, hard, harsh hash. Repeated passes through progressively finer screens leave you with almost pure resin heads, and you get pale gold hash that burns clean. Everything else is a point on that scale.

The grades, from commercial to top shelf

Colour is the fastest read but it is not the whole story. Blonde hash is pale because it is mostly resin heads, and that is genuinely a sign of careful sieving. Dark hash is dark either because it contains more plant matter or because it has oxidised with age. Both happen, and one is a quality issue while the other is not.

Blonde versus black

People search for Moroccan blonde and Moroccan black as if they were two products. They are two ends of the same process. Blonde is early sift, black is late sift or a heavier press. If you want flavour and a clear head, go blonde. If you want a heavier body effect and you do not mind a rougher smoke, the darker pressings do that.

How strong Moroccan hash actually is

Moroccan hash runs anywhere from around 15% THC for cheap commercial slate up to the mid 60s for well sifted blonde. That is a wide range, and it is wider than most people expect. A gram of good blonde and a gram of low-grade slate are not remotely the same purchase.

For comparison, strong cannabis flower sits somewhere around 20 to 30% THC. So even mid-grade Moroccan hash is stronger by weight than most flower, and the top end is roughly double. It is also a slower, more even effect than a dab, because you are combusting a pressed resin rather than vaporising an extract.

How to smoke it

Moroccan hash is dry enough that it does not need much prep. Warm a corner between your fingers for a few seconds and it will crumble.

• In a pipe. Put a small screen or a bit of flower underneath so it does not pull straight through. Low flame, do not roast it.
• In a joint. Crumble it along the length of the flower rather than dropping it in one lump, or it will burn unevenly and canoe.
• Hot knives. Old method, still works, still the most efficient way to use a small amount.
• Vaporiser. Works well at 190 to 210C, but use a concentrate pad or it will gum up the chamber.

What does not work well is a dab rig. Pressed hash contains plant material and it will scorch and leave residue rather than vaporising cleanly. If you want something for a rig, look at exotic hash and the solventless options instead.

How to tell if it is good

You can judge most of it before you smoke it.

• The bubble test. Hold a piece to a flame briefly. Resin-rich hash bubbles and the smoke is white. Hash cut with plant matter just burns and smokes grey.
• The squeeze. It should soften under hand heat within about ten seconds. If it stays rock hard it is either old or heavily padded.
• The smell. Real Moroccan smells spicy and slightly sweet cold, and stronger once warmed. No smell at all means it has been sitting too long.
• The ash. Pale grey or white ash is a good sign. Black, oily residue is not.

Common questions

How much THC is in Moroccan hash?

Between roughly 15% and 65% depending on grade. Commercial slate sits at the bottom, standard imports around 40 to 55%, and well sifted blonde at the top. The five we carry test between 40 and 70%.

What is the difference between Moroccan blonde and regular Moroccan hash?

Blonde has been sifted through finer screens and more times, so it is mostly resin with very little plant matter. That makes it lighter in colour, cleaner burning and usually stronger. Regular pressings include more of the plant, which makes them darker, cheaper and heavier feeling.

Is Moroccan hash legal in Morocco?

Recreational use is not. Morocco legalised cannabis for medical and industrial use in 2021, and licensed farming in parts of the Rif has started under that framework, but the traditional hash trade sits outside it.

How should I store it?

Airtight, out of light, at room temperature. A glass jar in a cupboard is fine. Do not refrigerate it, because condensation on the surface will make it sweat and go mouldy. Stored properly it keeps for a year or more, though it darkens and firms up over time.

Is Moroccan hash stronger than weed?

By weight, usually yes. Strong flower runs 20 to 30% THC and mid-grade Moroccan starts around 40%. The effect also comes on differently, slower to build and longer lasting, which catches people out if they judge the dose by volume.
